Here is the second article of the ’25 high school boys’ recap. It was clearly an exciting year for volleyball, and the mission is to get more states to sanction the sport and grow the game. Congrats to all the state champs!
Thank you to all the state ambassadors who wrote about their region. We reached out to each region by e-mail and Social Media. Many states did not get back to us. We will be running a preview article for the 2026 season in early February.

New Mexico
By Coach Jenny Ross
There were 15 varsity teams playing for first in the New Mexico Boys’ Volleyball State Championships.
In an incredibly competitive state tournament bracket, the Volcano Vista Hawks battled fiercely. The semifinal against Eldorado—a rematch from last year’s championship—was particularly significant. VVHS refused to give up a single set. In the finals against Sandia, the boys found themselves in a back-and-forth thriller, clinching the title in a heart-pounding third set, 20–18. Volcano Vista didn’t only win 1st place they became the first boys team in New Mexico to have an undefeated season of 20-0.
While Sandia’s Outside hitters Logan Cline and Isaac Pier threatened taking the title from Volcano, Freshman Libero Tyler Lund, anchored the defense with confidence and skill beyond his years, saved match point several times with amazing digs and saves. Estevan Perez, committed to Mount Mercy University, lit up the front row being an absolute power house OH and setting from the back row. His timing with Volcano’s middle, Tyler Romero, was the match point kill of the season for the title.
Just three years ago, VVHS launched its boys volleyball program. In 2023, the team took 3rd at State. In 2024, they improved to 2nd. And in 2025—they brought home the gold. This progression reflects a relentless pursuit of excellence that is now etched in school history.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Jenny Ross, who has been with the program from the start, this year’s team reached new heights. Coach Ross, along with Assistant Coaches Miah Alfaro, DJ Armijo, and Grace Harris, instilled values of commitment, chemistry, and perseverance. Their leadership fostered a tight-knit, resilient team determined never to back down. Supporting them throughout the season was dedicated team manager Lilia Pope. Lilia’s behind-the-scenes contributions were instrumental to the team’s success.
It was also exciting to see teams like Manzano (5th) and West Mesa (4th) coming out of the woodwork and being extremely talented competitive top 5 teams, adding more excitement to New Mexico’s 4th boys volleyball season. New Mexico coaches are committed to keep fighting for these boys in New Mexico to sanction the sport.

North Carolina

North Carolina boys’ volleyball continued its explosive rise in 2025, with more than 135 teams competing across public and private schools. The season was capped off by crowning 3 State Champions at the Queens University of Charlotte, which also fields a men’s collegiate volleyball program. They were incredible hosts and the Curry Arena elevated their State Championship experience.
In the 4A title match, West Forsyth claimed the championship with a 3-1 win over Hough (21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18). The Final Four also included Chapel Hill and Weddington, each representing powerhouse programs from different regions of the state.
In the 1A–3A division, TMSA (Triangle Math and Science Academy) took home the trophy with a dominant 3-1 win over Mount Pleasant (25-19, 34-36, 25-13, 25-10). Eno River and Union Academy rounded out the Final Four after impressive playoff runs.
Private schools also crowned a champion in a separate playoff series, with Covenant Day defeating Liberty Prep in the Finals to clinch the Title. The private school bracket featured an Elite 8 format and showcased talent across independent programs statewide.
This year also marked a major milestone: After 9 seasons, North Carolina officially kicked off the sanctioning process with the NCHSAA. A formal request for full sanctioning will be submitted in May 2026, with strong indications that the sport’s continued growth will make it a reality.
“The growth that’s happening in North Carolina is the result of passionate grassroots work from students, parents, and coaches combined with funding support from our Carolina Region of USAV” said Sarah Conklin, Director of the NCBVA. “This isn’t just about volleyball—it’s about opportunity and connection. Boys across the state are discovering a new sport they love, and we’re watching communities all across our state rally to make it happen.”

Oklahoma

There were twenty-seven teams participating in the 2025 OKBVA league that divided the state for the first time into East and West districts. With the support of the Oklahoma Boys Volleyball Association (OKBVA) the number of teams participating should continue to grow eventually leading to boys volleyball becoming a sanctioned sport by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA). The Southwest Oklahoma City Tridents won the OKBVA State Championship against the Jenks High SchoolTrojans (25-16, 25-23, 25-17). Senior Darrell Kosechequetah at outside hitter led the team through an undefeated season without dropping a set in the state tournament. Jenks High School nearly claimed the second set, held a lead in the third but could not sustain the effort. The semi-final games were outstanding displays of high level volleyball with notable play from the Oklahoma City Storm and a five-set battle from the young Casady School squad.

Oregon

2025 was a record setting year for Oregon High School Boys Volleyball. We had students from 78 schools represented and 68 varsity teams. We fell just shy of 1000 student-athletes. Our state tournament saw 1800 ticket holders walk through the doors to support these young men. The fan base is growing and the game is growing. We held four classification-based brackets and awarded trophies for 1st-6th place, Sportsmanship and Coach of the Year at each level.
6A Summary :
Central Catholic dominated all season long finishing with an undefeated record of 18-0 to take home the championship. Not to be overlooked was upstart and 7th ranked Sunset Apollos who pushed Central Catholic to the brink in a 5-set thriller in the championship match. This was a brilliant result from the Apollos, clad in their school’s soccer jerseys. They continue to fight not only their competition, but also their school district for support. The one group that they aren’t fighting to win over is their growing fanbase.
5A Summary :
The Summit Storm successfully defended their championship from 2024 and are now back-to-back state champions. The Storm, from Bend, Oregon, swept the wildly popular Parkrose Broncos in the title game. This shouldn’t take anything away from the Broncos’ season as they came into the tournament ranked #2 across all classifications. The Storm return all 11 players from their varsity roster for 2026 and their community support continues to drive their passion to compete.
4A Summary :
Estacada ascended to the top of their classification under leadership from Oregon Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year and NFHS Section 8 Coach of the Year, Susan Doan. It was a gritty performance from the Rangers as they found themselves in a 2-0 set deficit and completed the rare reverse sweep over the Crook County Cowboys from Prineville, Oregon. Crook County earned the sportsmanship award in 2024, but returned this year looking for more hardware and earned themselves an impressive 2nd place finish behind Mallory Hall’s outstanding leadership.
3A/2A/1A Summary :
The Crusaders of St. Mary’s School in Medford, Oregon completed their mission of back-to-back championships with an absolute battle (and 2024 rematch) with Portland Adventist Academy. St. Mary’s was led by a trio of first-team all-state selections. PAA’s senior setter, Taylor Kim, used his buttery hands and balanced distribution to force a 5th set and nearly pulled off a reverse-sweep of their own.

TENNESSEE

Tennessee does not have sanctioned boys high school volleyball yet. The Tennessee Boys Volleyball Association, founded in 2023, held their second annual state tournament on May 10, 2025. There were 16 teams participating in our state tournament this year. We look forward to holding a JV state tournament as well next year! This year there was one division, and we separated after pool play into the Gold, Silver and Bronze brackets. Next season we plan to have two divisions: Single School Teams and Hybrid Teams.

MaxPreps reported: Defending-champion Green Hill High School had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn’t miss a beat now that it’s playoff time. They walked away with a 2-0 victory (25-17, 25-20) over the Brentwood Academy Eagles on Saturday in the State Championship final match. The Hawks are really starting to get used to good results now that the team has won 12 straight. Brentwood handed Green Hill their only season loss, in a tight regular season match, defeating the Hawks 15-13 in the fifth set.
Senior George Stevens (who will be playing for Lincoln Memorial University next season) produced another solid effort getting 15 kills, seven digs, and seven aces. MaxPreps named Stevens Player of the Match in four matches at the State Tournament. He is on a roll when it comes to kills- with five or more in each of the last 11 games he’s played. Junior setter Lincoln Witt was another key player, getting 23 assists. Green Hill’s win bumped their record up to 21-1.
Trish Flowers, Siegel High School boys and girls head coach, was voted on by her peers and named 2025 Tennessee Boys Volleyball Coach of the Year.
